Easy Breakfasts That Aren’t Boring

While it might be known as the “most important meal of the day,” breakfast, for many of us, is usually an afterthought. We often don’t have the time, or energy, in the a.m. to think of anything other than toast, cereal and coffee or black tea.

Now’s your chance to plan ahead. Read these recipes and treat the you of tomorrow to a delicious, outside-the-box breakfast that is anything but boring:

Strawberry Cheese French Toast

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, you’ve probably tried french toast. Strawberry Cheese French toast changes your French toast experience. Savoury cream cheese balances the sweetness of berries with National Strawberry Jam. French toast is prepared in the traditional way (bread dipped in egg, milk, vanilla and spice mix and then fried) and fresh strawberries are combined with sugar and lemon on the stovetop. Once the strawberry syrup has cooked down, add 1 tbsp of the syrup combo, 1 tbsp of National Strawberry Jam and 1 tbsp of cream cheese to a piece of French toast. Enjoy as is or sandwich between another piece of French toast for a truly decadent breakfast!

Khageena (Pakistani Spicy Scrambled Eggs)

Eggs are nutrient packed and their protein staying power helps to keep you satiated for longer. Instead of plain scrambled eggs, try Khageena, a quick (under 15 minutes!) breakfast that will quickly become a family favourite. Saute onions with turmeric powder, red chili flakes, red chili powder and National himalayan salt. Add your eggs, tomato and coriander and breakfast is ready! Serve with your choice of bread or paratha. This recipe also makes a great “breakfast for dinner” option on a busy weeknight.

Paratha

Warm pastries, croissants and toast are all well known breakfast options around the world, but paratha is the ultimate breakfast pairing in Pakistani or Indian homes. Flaky layers of warm pastry, ghee and perfectly crispy dough will make this a new breakfast favourite in your home. A simple dough is made and then fried in a pan or griddle. Slather paratha right from the pan with chutney, butter or jam for melt in your mouth flavour.

Masala Chai

As we head into the colder months, a delicious warm tea is a wonderful addition to your morning breakfast routine. If you’re looking to drink less coffee or want to try another delectable make-at-home breakfast drink, look no further than Masala Chai. While you’ve probably heard of chai (tea and milk), Masala Chai is a creamy and delicious spiced tea enjoyed in India (and all over the world.) It includes tea, milk and a blend of spices (ginger, cinnamon, clove, cardamom and black pepper) as well as some sweetener. In one pot on the stove, mix all ingredients and bring to a boil. This recipe will warm your soul and keep you awake on those cold winter days.

Breakfast is an important meal and by adding these recipes into your daily rotation you’ll be excited to wake up in the morning. Whether you’re in the mood for savoury or sweet, these breakfasts will keep you and your family’s bellies full until lunchtime.
